The Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud: Solar System Outer Reaches

Beyond Neptune lies the Kuiper Belt, a donut-shaped region from 30-50 AU containing billions of icy bodies. Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake are its largest known members. Short-period comets originate here.

Even farther out is the Oort Cloud, a theoretical spherical shell from 2,000 to 100,000 AU containing trillions of icy objects. Long-period comets come from here. The Oort Cloud marks the gravitational boundary of our solar system.

Together, these reservoirs contain remnants from the solar system formation that never coalesced into planets..
